For private landlords

  • Note: private landlords do not have access to the Tenancy Tracker platform.

  • 1. Why did I receive someone's tenancy application?

A tenant used the 'Apply now' button on your Trade Me rental listing. This lets them log into Tenancy Tracker (Trade Me’s free tenancy application system) and submit their application to rental providers.

  • 2. What's in this application?

It contains all the relevant information that a rental provider needs to qualify a prospective tenant, such as:

    • ID and personal details for all applicants
    • Current and previous living situation
    • Employment details
    • References

  • 3. What should I do with it?

Take a look through the applications and contact your preferred tenants to arrange a viewing of the property.

  • 4. If everything looks good and I want to let them rent my property, then what?

You’ll need to create a tenancy agreement. You can use the templates on the Tenancy Services website to help you out.

  • 5. Why can't I see the 'Apply now' button when I look at my listing using a mobile device?

For now this feature is only available when viewed on our desktop site.

For Credit Checks

  • Note: private landlords do not have access to the Tenancy Tracker platform.

  • 1. What does this mean for me?

This will ease your application handling and reduce costs if an applicant purchases a credit check. It shows that the tenant is serious about their application.

  • 2. Can every tenant purchase a credit check?

Every applicant who holds a valid NZ ID (NZ Passport or NZ Drivers License) and a credit card can purchase a credit check using the Tenancy Tracker Multi-bureau service.

  • 3. What do I have to do?

Nothing. If a tenant has purchased a credit check, the credit report will be automatically attached to the email you receive with their application.

  • 4. What happens if a tenant does not purchase a credit check?

Since the service is optional for the tenant they may not choose to purchase a credit check. They may also not have a valid NZ ID so cannot complete the credit check.

  • 5. What happens if a tenant purchases a credit check after they have already submitted their application?

The applicant has the option to purchase a credit check after they have submitted their application. If a tenant decides to purchase a credit check after their application submission, you will receive an email with the credit report attached.

  • 6. Can I purchase a credit check on the tenant?

We hope to enable landlords to purchase a credit check on a tenant in the future.

  • 7. Can tenants use the same credit check report for other properties?

Yes, the tenants credit check is valid for 90 days, where they can attach it to other property applications in that timeframe.
